Where kyle stands

Internet, like electricty and water, is a necessity in 2023

Lack of Internet access is a HUGE problem for people.  In 2023, it is required to function fully in society.  (Internet and Broadband are pretty much synonymous)

Rural broadband, and inner-city too, is a significant problem that affects millions of people. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Limited access to education: Without reliable internet access, students struggle to access online resources, attend virtual classes, or complete online assignments. This can limit their educational opportunities and put them at a disadvantage.
  2. Limited access to healthcare: With the increasing use of telemedicine, lack of broadband can make it difficult for rural residents, in particular, to access medical care remotely. This can result in delayed diagnosis and treatment, which can be life-threatening in some cases.
  3. Limited job opportunities: Many modern jobs require reliable internet access, and lack of broadband can limit job opportunities for rural residents. This can lead to economic hardship, and can also contribute to rural brain drain. It is also tough to find a job if you do not have internet access, both rural and urban.
  4. Limited access to information: Reliable internet access is essential for accessing news, information, and other resources. Without it, folks may be isolated from the broader world, limiting their exposure to new ideas and perspectives.  Also, it creates barriers to success in a fast-moving world.
  5. Limited access to essential services: Lack of broadband can make it difficult for rural residents to access essential services such as government resources, banking services, and emergency services.

Overall, lack of rural and inner-city broadband is a significant problem that can limit access to education, healthcare, job opportunities, information, and essential services. It is essential that steps are taken to improve rural broadband access to ensure that rural residents have the same opportunities as their urban counterparts.

Why do urban areas lack broadband access?

Broadband affordability can be a problem in urban areas for some households, particularly those with lower incomes. While broadband may be more widely available in urban areas compared to rural areas, the cost of broadband service can still be a barrier for some households, particularly those with limited financial resources.

In some cases, broadband providers may offer discounted or low-cost plans for low-income households, but these programs may not be widely advertised or may have eligibility requirements that some households may not meet. Additionally, in some urban areas, there may be limited competition among broadband providers, which can lead to higher prices for consumers.

The issue of broadband affordability in urban areas is particularly important given the increasing reliance on high-speed internet for education, work, and other essential services. Addressing this issue can help ensure that all households, regardless of income level, have access to the tools and resources they need to fully participate in modern society.

Why do rural areas lack broadband access?

Rural areas may lack broadband access for several reasons, including:

  1. Infrastructure: Building broadband infrastructure in rural areas can be more challenging and expensive than in urban areas due to the lower population density, longer distances between households, and more rugged terrain. These factors can make it more difficult and costly for broadband providers to install the necessary infrastructure, such as fiber optic cables or cell towers, to deliver high-speed internet to rural areas.
  2. Market Size: Because the population density is lower in rural areas, there may be less demand for broadband services compared to urban areas. As a result, broadband providers may be less willing to invest in building broadband infrastructure in rural areas because the potential return on investment is lower.
  3. Cost: The cost of providing broadband service in rural areas can be higher due to the factors mentioned above, as well as other factors such as the need for additional equipment to cover larger areas. These higher costs can make it more difficult for broadband providers to offer affordable broadband service to rural households.

Overall, the combination of lower population density, higher infrastructure costs, and potentially lower demand for broadband services in rural areas can make it less profitable for broadband providers to offer high-speed internet access to rural communities.
